Elementary Library

As April unfolds, so does the celebration of National School Library Month, a time to recognize the invaluable role of libraries in fostering knowledge, curiosity, and literacy among students. With that recognition, Hermantown Community Schools is highlighting the work of our library clerks, who help cultivate a love of reading within our students and assist students with projects, papers, technology, media and so much more.

HCS talked with Hermantown Elementary Library Clerk, Lisa Ball to get insight on the library and her favorite part about her role.

What is your favorite part about working in the Elementary library?
"I love everything about my job - in fact, I think I have the best job in the whole district! The kids are wonderful little people that I get to watch grow each week from K-4th grade. I have the best co-workers, and I'm surrounded by books. My favorite thing is probably when I get a student "hooked" on a series. The Book Fairs are pretty happy weeks, too, when the kids get to shop on their own for books - they get so excited."

What are the top five books checked out from the library?
"The top five series being checked out from the library this year are: Who Would Win, Dog Man, I Survived, Babysitters Club, and Creepy Carrots."

What are your top-three favorite books?

"It's so hard to choose my favorite books! Favorite picture book is Creepy Carrots, my favorite younger level chapter book is Boxcar Children, and my favorite older level chapter book is Because of Mr. Terupt."

What is something about the library that people may not know?
"People may not realize that the elementary school library checks out over 25,000 books each school year!"

Anything else you'd like people to know about the Elementary library?
"The kids are always surprising me and making me smile. This morning a third grader walked in, took a deep breath, and said, "I love the smell of the library. It smells like good books." =)
